The Nineties boyband’s latest offering is standard fare topped with modern sprinkles, but Blood Red Shoes make a significant change in sound on their fifth record. In fact, the boyband are now in their 25th year, and have been releasing albums throughout that time with relative regularity. This is their first since , mind, and surely a nudging reminder of their existence ahead of a world tour that will presumably trade heavily on nostalgia. The lyrics, meanwhile, range from the hilariously cheesy to the fully dire.
There are occasional more interesting moments. But mostly this standard boyband fare, reheated, and topped with modern pop sprinkles. It just feels so unnecessary. This is what happened with Brighton two-piece Blood Red Shoes, whose lead vocalist and guitarist Laura-Mary Carter quit not for the first time after their fourth album while Steven Ansell embarked on six months of clubbing in Brighton. Their new record Get Tragic — released via their own Jazz Life records after a string of misfortunes with other label signings — marks the transition to a significantly heavier rock sound.
There is some sense that Blood Red Shoes are trying too hard to cultivate their own myth, with all these tales of rock and roll hedonism.

Blood Red Shoes are whipping up a storm at the moment on their latest UK tour and they have also released their new single Lost Kids. I caught up with Laura-Mary Carter to discuss the new single the album and where they will be performing live this summer. Its hard to explain! I think you will need to listen to it. I am not sure I can tell you in words what to expect.
Blood Red Shoes are an English alternative rock duo from Brighton They played a nine-date tour of the UK, in support of the album, followed by dates across.
The synergy between the duo is pretty remarkable, as both members frequently trade between lead and backup vocals throughout the songs. Blood Red Shoes is a Brighton-based band from England, and have released four albums. This album, Box of Secrets, is their debut LP — and is mostly comprised of re-recorded singles that were previously released in limited supply. The result is a series of tracks blistering with energetic guitar and drum playing.
You probably figured that out though. Neither of them try to outdo the other, and both members cooperate to go through the songs rather than switching back and forth between one instrument and another. I like how they trade roles and set each other up for key moments in the song where both have to be at the top of their game to make the songs sound the way they should. As for the songs themselves, a lot of them seem to be about failed relationships. The tracks are varied in their sound but consistent with their post-punk sounding aesthetics.
Blood Red Shoes functions as a singular unit, and they do this job exceptionally well. Not all goes well for the pair, however. There are also times where the album comes off as too loud — the instruments themselves like I said never really overtake the other, and they do sound full , but when you have both of them trying to fill the gap of a third person with lots of reverb and loud vocals everything can get a little muddled and too noisy.
Blood Red Shoes
It’s the sort of music you want to listen to in a dimly lit room and let itwrap itself around you. I especially liked the haunting track ‘Beverly’. It’s a bit of a comeback album for the Brighton duo, made up of Carter and drummer Steven Ansell, after a temporary split following their fourth album. They had been relentlessly gigging off the back of their self-produced and self-titled record. The pair took a break – from each other.
They have performed many, many live shows to date and initially released four 7″ records on different independent labels (Jonson Family, Try Harder, Abeano/XL,.
After years of a constant release-tour-release cycle, Blood Red Shoes decided they were sick of the sight of each other back in In classic rock band style, the sibling duo separated in order to find themselves. For singer-guitarist Laura-Mary Carter, this involved getting on a one-way flight to the USA and writing songs for pop producers. There’s an old Scottish phrase “gang aft agley” which roughly translates as “often go wrong”.
One thing we know for sure, albums written by bands in conflict fucking rule. Pressing shuffle and landing on Blood Red Shoes is equivalent to taking a shot of whiskey. You may think that you didn’t need it, but turns out you did. Steven Ansel’s drums bang out heavy rhythms, Laura Mary-Carter’s guitar cleaves, and both members sing. New album Get Tragic coming after a five-year gap is royal. Everyone knows someone who has stayed in a broken relationship for one specific reason.
BLOOD RED SHOES
The self-titled album lends itself to an ooze of self-confidence and the exhibition of the core sound and creativity a band holds, and what a band are through musical fusion in a collectivity of songs. Alternative duo Blood Red Shoes aim to achieve just that. The typical Blood Red Shoes sound is instantly recognisible, but with a heavier haunting edge added through sunken, yet agile riffs.

Ansell, who performed with Cat on Form, and Carter, a former member of Lady Muck, came together in late upon the demise of their previous bands. With one song in tow, the angsty duo landed a gig and Blood Red Shoes were born; the name is reminiscent of Ginger Rogers, who allegedly had to redo a tap dance scene so many times that her white dancing shoes ended up covered in blood. By , Carter and Ansell were finally ready to release their debut album, and Box of Secrets, which was produced by Mike Crossey Razorlight, Arctic Monkeys , appeared that April to generally strong reviews.
The duo re-teamed with Crossey for ‘s Fire Like This, which found Blood Red Shoes adopting a more stripped-down sound, and worked with the producer again two years later on In Time to Voices, a more expansive effort that embraced grunge, Americana, and shoegaze influences. In , Blood Red Shoes returned with their fourth studio album, an eponymous effort released on their own Jazz Life imprint.
